The Truth About Bacon

Share this article with your friends

One of the first thing MOST people think about when they think of the ketogenic diet is eating piles of bacon, loads of butter and big stacks of other fatty foods.

And for the most part they’d be somewhat correct.

Unfortunately, a lot of people also think that something as fatty as bacon, should only be an occasional treat.

They’ve been told that it will clog their arteries, give them heart disease, raise their cholesterol and cause them to have a stroke.

Hopefully you’ve read enough of the information I’ve shared with you so far to know that when it comes to the scientific and medical communities, they get A LOT of things wrong when it comes to nutrition.

The good news is that more recently, this trend is starting to change a bit.

Scientists have finally started to agree that it’s the highly processed polyunsaturated fats from vegetable oils like corn and soy that are the REAL killers.

That along with the consumption of WAY too much sugar and starch.

But Bacon for the most part still has a bad reputation in the mainstream media because of its high levels of saturated fat and sodium.

However, what most people don’t realize is that pork fat is actually only 40% saturated fat, the rest is broken up into 48% monosaturated, and 12% polyunsaturated (it does vary based on what the pigs ate), while coconut oil is 92% saturated fat, and we all know how good coconut oil is for you!

And get this…

If you review the scientific literature, there is STILL no evidence that:

  • too much saturated fat raises your cholesterol
  • saturated fat causes heart disease
  • high cholesterol causes heart attacks
  • lowering cholesterol reduces heart disease
  • Obesity rates correlate with fat consumption

The types of fat you SHOULD be worried about are toxic trans fats and polyunsaturated fats I mentioned above.

And the truth is…the real reason for things like heart disease is inflammation, not saturated fat or cholesterol.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times…

Don’t be afraid of saturated fat – instead, include a variety of foods high in monounsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids.

Just like I teach in the Two-Week Keto Challenge.

What About The Sodium In Bacon?

We all know that there’s an awful lot of sodium in bacon. The real question is…is it bad for you? The popular advice is to keep sodium intake down. However, while you’re on the ketogenic diet, you should actually be INCREASING your sodium intake.

I’ve discussed this before but it’s worth repeating…

The reason you want to get more sodium is because as your insulin levels drop, it causes more sodium to be extracted through your kidneys.

Plus, as you eliminate processed foods from your diet, your sodium intake will likely be lower than what you’ve been used to.

And if that wasn’t reason enough to increase your sodium intake…

Boosting your sodium along with other minerals will also help you fight off symptoms of the keto flu.

So, how much sodium should you be getting?

About 3,000-5,000 mg in addition to sodium naturally occurring in food.

Now don’t think that you can pound down a cup of salt each day while you’re on the keto diet.

100 g / 3.5 oz of bacon contains about 2,000 mg of sodium.

But, in general, you shouldn’t worry about sodium content in bacon.

How about the nitrates found in bacon?

As long as you’re getting plenty of antioxidants in your diet each day nitrates shouldn’t be a concern.

An excellent way to make sure that you’re getting plenty of antioxidants and other phytonutrients is by taking a good low carb green drink like Keto Greens With MCT.

It packed with antioxidants as well as vitamins, minerals and healthy plant extracts AND as it’s name implies it’s 100% Keto friendly.

So, when it comes to bacon here is the simple conclusion…

There are a ton of things you should worry about when it comes to the types of food you eat.

But bacon is not one of them.

That being said, you should try to eat traditionally cured, pastured-raised meats raised locally if possible.

They are much healthier, and a LOT safer.
